name: Penelope Dullaghan born: September 6, I977, in Goshen, Indiana now living: in West Columbia, South Carolina beginnings: I think I must have been born with a paintbrush in my hand (it really threw off the doctors). I came by it naturally, though. My grandma, who was an artist, always taught me to see art in the everyday. She had a gift for seeing beauty in simple things—red strawberries on a blue-and-white checked tablecloth, or silver spoons in carnival glass. She and I used to hunt for fun textures and make rubbings from them. I always wanted to be an artist. I never considered being anything else.
artist’s statement
I love color, and I love playing with simple
shapes and tex-tures to evoke different feelings in my paintings. So it
really
doesn’t matter if it’s for a business assignment or personal
work, those are
always going to be the basic elements: simple ideas and
bold colors. Art is all
about expressing insights and sharing them with
others.
an average day
I like to paint in the afternoon,
when it seems to come more easily, and use the mornings for catching up
with
email, bookkeeping, etc. I usually work late and then
break for
dinner and time
with my family in the evening.
muse
I try to take time for myself in the morning: reading,
writing, some yoga, and a short walk with my dog. I’m working
toward
more of
mesh of life and art—less pushing, more
listening.
next
I’d like to get into packaging and product art, like
designing yoga mats, textiles, And everyday items, like canned
goods—I
think
that could be fun.
